Saving the Environment in Qur’an

Recently I was asked to recite and give a short speech at an event pertaining to saving the environment. Usually we perceive religious scriptures to only include topics such as “worshipping God,” “abstaining from evil,” “doing good” and so on. However, if the the Qu’ran truly is a solution for everything I knew it must have had some verses relating to the environment. So here’s synopsis of what I presented:

Muhsin Khan

The sun and the moon run on their fixed courses (exactly) calculated with measured out stages for each (for reckoning, etc.).

Muhsin Khan

And the heaven He has raised high, and He has set up the Balance.

Muhsin Khan

In order that you may not transgress (due) balance.

Muhsin Khan

And observe the weight with equity and do not make the balance deficient.

What we learn from these verses is that God Al-Mighty created the earth with precise measure and balance and commanded man to avoid transgressing the balance. But this raises an important question; why then do we need to save the planet and spread so much awareness if the earth was created with such measure? The answer is, in actuality the earth is corrupted, not beacuse of God’s way of creating it, but rather due to mans evil actions. Allah states this in Surah Rum;
Sahih International

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned (by oppression and evil deeds) so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

We learn that corruption exists not just on an environmental scale, but also on a political scale, social scale, and economic scale solely due to man’s corrupt actions. Hence, if we want to bring about change, we need to abstain from opression and evil deeds. God explains:
Sahih International

Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.

And surely know that

Man can have nothing except that which he strives for

Allah (swt) also explains that everything that was created and exists has a purpose. He says,

Sahih International

And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.

Essentially, this verse reinforces the scientific concept “chain of life”as it suggests how different species all depend on one another to ensure survival. Allah says, everything serves a purpose. Therefore, if we as Muslims and humans want to ensure survival and save the planet, we need to minimize and potentially rid the corruption which exists on earth by improving our behaviour in all aspects.

Finally, a simple solution Allah presents in the Qur’an is “O children of Adam… eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess” (7:31).
